Top Nine Immediate Opt Outs – Tips & Worksheet

Each individual people search site has their own rules and timeframes for completing an opt out (or deletion) request. Without any strong Federal oversight or regulations regarding an opt-out process (aside from a vague statue mandating that some kind of opt out process must exist), each individual site and company is legally able to make the process as complicated and time-consuming as they like. The result is a few hundred sites all displaying your Personally-Identifiable Information (P.I.I.), each with their own unique process that may involve confirmation emails, phone calls, online forms, and even sending request letters via fax or U.S. Mail. This alone – more than just displaying the information without our permission in the first place – is what truly makes people search sites extremely dangerous for the average individual.

You will find – along with the complicated sites and procedures – there is a small handful of sites that have both simple opt out processes and instant results. That doesn’t mean these sites aren’t dangerous or troublesome, however – they rank high on Google, show extremely sensitive information, and will still require you to submit a Dead Link Request to Google to expedite the cached description in search results (more on that later in the article). These sites are also very prone to data repopulations, and should therefore be rechecked in one week, one month, and three months from now. These repopulations occur because these sites scrape from one another and/or resell their own information; this produces a whack-a-mole game of data deletion for the first several months of the process.

To fully stop the repopulation cycle, a continual effort over several months should be made on all available data sites (323 individual sites as of October 2017). As you work on your privacy, continue to reference our Free Resources videos and worksheets or consider one of our paid opt out and monitoring services (be sure to check out privacyduck.com/discount-programs for information on our permanent 20-60% discount programs for identity theft, cyber bullying, and hate crime victims.

What You’ll Need To Opt-Out:

Nearly all of the below sites require an email address to verify your opt-out request. We recommend not using your regular email, but rather a disposable, temporary account created just for this purpose. You will not need to reference any of these emails for future use. We recommend using a disposable email account through EmailOnDeck.com, AOL.com, or some other similar service.

Only one of the sites on this Top Nine Immediate Opt Outs list requires a copy of your state-issued driver’s license or identification card (this is required by BackgroundAlert.com). For security reasons, make sure you block out your picture, signature, and license/identification number; the issuing state, your name, your date of birth, and address must be showing.

How to Use This Worksheet

  • Step 1:Gather your needed items:
    • A pen for this worksheet
    • A temporary / disposable email address used for this purpose
    • An edited copy of your license / identification card as described above
  • Step 2: Walk through each site step-by-step to opt out; the needed links are provided below to both: a) the opt out pages and b) the corresponding detailed video tutorials on youtube.com/privacyduckcom
  • Step 3: Ensure all your Confirmation Emails have been clicked before ending your work.
  • Step 4: Search for yourself on Google via first and last name, city and state. For example, you’ll want to type in (with the quotation marks): “John Smith”, San Francisco, CA. When you do this you’ll probably find links on Google to the pages you just opted out from. When you click on these links it will lead to a 404 Error Page, or a “Page Not Found”. These will naturally fall off within 3-5 weeks, but to proactively delete them at a faster rate, submit the links to Google’s Dead Content Page at: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/removals (you will need a Google account to do this). This will also need to be done for repopulations.
  • Step 5: Set a Calendar Reminder for yourself to recheck these sites (not the exact URLs you deleted, but a fresh search of the site) in a week, a month, and three months from now for repopulations. Reprint this worksheet to work at that time.
